# Karangasem and the eastern tip

Karangasem is the easternmost regency of Bali and the area where [Dek Leonk](/en/about/dek-leonk) was born. It was once a kingdom of its own, and you can still see that: palaces, water palaces and temples that have belonged to the same families for centuries. Mount Agung, at over 3,000 metres the highest and holiest mountain on the island, dominates the landscape. In the villages everything revolves around the temple calendar, and there is almost always a ceremony somewhere.

Tourists mostly come here for [a day at Tirta Gangga](/en/trips/east-bali-day-tour) or the [Lempuyang gate](/en/blog/instagram-bali-vs-real-bali). Stay the night and you see a different Bali: dry hills with lontar palms, fishermen heading out in their jukung at sunrise, markets where you're the only foreigner. ## How to combine it

Karangasem lies between [Sidemen](/en/destinations/sidemen) and [Amed](/en/destinations/amed). Two or three nights in Sidemen or Amed make a good base.

**Isn't East Bali too far away?**

From the airport it's a two and a half to three hour drive. That's why we recommend staying a few nights, rather than rushing through on a day trip.
