Your driver on Bali
Dek Leonk
Everyone calls him Dek Leonk. His official name is I Made Partha Wijaya: the I means he is a man, Made that he is the second child in his family. He was born 48 years ago in an age-old village on the eastern tip of Bali, in Karangasem, the part of the island where life still revolves around the temple and the harvest.
He has been driving travellers around Bali for twenty years. In that time he saw the south fill up with buildings and the traffic jams grow. He also knows where it is still quiet: which rice fields you have to yourself at seven in the morning, which village has a ceremony today and which roadside warung makes the best lunch.
On the way he happily stops for a local snack, explains why there are little offerings on every pavement and, when it suits, shows you the village where he grew up. At home his wife and two sons are waiting.
