The north and west of Bali are green, cool and quiet. There are no beach clubs and no traffic jams, but there are mountain lakes, plantations and a coast with coral reefs. This trip is for people who like to be active: walking, snorkelling and early starts. It also works well as a second week, after a few days in the south or in Ubud.
Day by day
Day 1: to Jatiluwih
Dek Leonk picks you up and drives you two hours to the rice terraces. You sleep in a homestay at the edge of the fields and go for a walk at the end of the afternoon, when the light softens.
Days 2–4: Munduk
Early in the morning to Ulun Danu Beratan, the temple that seems to float on the lake. Then up into the mountains. You walk with a local guide to three waterfalls and past coffee plantations.
Days 5–7: Pemuteran
Two hours to the northwest coast. A quiet village by the sea with a coral restoration project. One day you take a boat to Menjangan, one of the best snorkelling spots in Bali.
Day 8: back to the south
A long drive of four to five hours along the west coast, with a lunch stop. Rather not do it in one go? Then spend your last night in Ubud or Medewi.
What you pay locally
Estimate for two: about €750–1,200 in total. Dek Leonk as your driver for eight days, about €400–520; seven nights, about €280–550; the boat trip to Menjangan, a guide in Munduk and entrance fees, about €80–120. You pay all of it directly to Dek Leonk, the places you stay and the guides.
An indication. You pay this directly to Dek Leonk and the accommodation, not to us.
How to make this trip
Questions about this trip
Is the north really quieter?
Yes, much quieter. In Munduk and Pemuteran you mostly meet travellers who chose to go there.
How cold is it in Munduk?
Around 22 degrees during the day, sometimes 16 at night. Bring a jumper.
Can I dive instead of snorkelling?
Yes. Pemuteran has good dive schools. Let us know in advance and Dek Leonk will book you a place.
