North Bali
QuietLovina and the north coast
Bali's north coast is drier and quieter: black sand beaches at Lovina, hot springs, waterfalls and Singaraja, the old capital from the Dutch era.

- Region
- North Bali
- Drive time
- About 3 hours from the airport, 1 hour from Munduk
- Best time

Do not miss
- Black sand beaches and a calm sea
- The Banjar hot springs
- The Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist monastery
- The Sekumpul and Gitgit waterfalls
- Singaraja, the old capital from the Dutch colonial era
The north coast is the side of Bali you reach when you drive down from Munduk and suddenly see a completely different island: drier, quieter, with vineyards and coastal villages. Lovina was a popular spot for backpackers in the 1980s and then slipped out of view. That's good news: it's relaxed, affordable and free of crowds.
In Singaraja, the old port town, you can still see buildings from colonial times; until the end of the 1950s this was the capital of Bali. A little inland are the Banjar hot springs, stone pools with dragon heads, and the only large Buddhist monastery on the island.
We don't recommend the well-known dolphin trips at sunrise: dozens of boats chase the animals at the same time. A quiet morning on the beach or a snorkelling trip is a better choice.
How to combine it
Lovina fits well between Munduk and Pemuteran, or as a quiet stop on the way from Amed to the west.
