Where your travel money goes: twelve days on Bali worked out

What do twelve days on Bali for two cost on the spot, and who gets that money? A worked example with the driver, the places to stay, outings and your trip plan.

  • money
  • fair travel

With a big travel company, a large part of your travel money stays in Europe. The driver, the homestay and the cooking teacher on Bali only see part of it.

With us it works differently. I worked it out below.

The worked example

Twelve days on Bali, the two of you, with Dek Leonk as your driver and stays in homestays and small hotels. These are the indicative prices we use:

ItemIndicative price
Dek Leonk as your driver€45–65 a day, 10 hours, fuel included
Homestay or small hotel€25–80 a night for two
Villa with a pool€80–200 a night
Scooter€5–8 a day
Cooking class, ceremony, boat trip€15–40 per person

All together such a trip costs roughly €1,200 to €2,000 on the spot. You pay that directly to the people who provide it.

On top of that comes your personal trip plan. If you take the Trip plan with stays, that is €350.

Where the money goes

Work it out, and about 80% of what you spend (excluding flights) goes to the people on Bali. About 20% is the price of your trip plan.

We earn nothing on the trip itself. No mark-up on the driver, no commission from the places you stay. That is not a marketing line, it is simply how the model works: we do not pass money on, so there is nothing to skim off.

What is not included

To be clear:

  • Flights. You book those yourself.
  • Meals. At a warung you eat for €1.50 to €3.
  • The tourist levy (IDR 150,000 per person) and the visa (IDR 500,000 per person).
  • Entrance fees for temples and waterfalls.
