Highlights

  • A smaller spring such as Pura Mengening, instead of the crowds at Tirta Empul
  • Dek Leonk explains step by step what happens, before you start
  • A ritual Balinese people do themselves at a new stage in life

Melukat is a purification ritual in which you stand under a series of fountains of spring water. Balinese people do it at a new stage in their lives, or when they feel they need it. At the well-known temple of Tirta Empul you share it with hundreds of others. Dek Leonk takes you to a smaller spring, such as Pura Mengening, and explains step by step beforehand what will happen: which fountain you skip, what you say and what you wear.

Good to know

You'll be given a sarong and sash. Bring dry clothes. By Balinese custom, women who have their period don't enter the temple; you can talk this through with Dek Leonk beforehand, so you can choose another day.
